Happy President’s Day!

Curriculum

We are currently working on two projects. Students should complete their novel setting project his week week. We are also working on Wax Museum, as you are aware. I am doing my best to make sure your students stay on task and are completing the steps of our Wax Museum timely. Students simply can’t get behind on this project without requiring students to work after school and on weekends. Please check in with your students and make sure they are completing each step as we progress. If you have any questions, we can always set up a google meet as well.

This week, we will also make a mold terrarium. I will make one remotely and I am inviting students to do it at home. It is one of our science standards and scaffolds with the ecosystems and habitat lessons we’ve completed in the last week or so. If you’d like to duplicate this process at home, your student will need the following supplies.

  • a single one-gallon Ziploc bag
  • a paper plate
  • food (apples slice, cheese, bread, banana slice, or any unprepared food. I am creating our class terrarium with a piece of citrus, a piece of bread, and some cheese.)
  • a cup of water with which to moisten the food
  • a piece of tape to make sure the Ziploc stays closed! I will use duct tape.
  • sugar, salt, darkness, or light; whichever they choose to add to their experiment.

They will label the bag with the start date and their intended testing condition. They can use a marker or a piece of paper and some tape. Depending on their decision, they may add sugar, salt, darkness, or sunlight to their experiment. Students will want their food close together/touching when they put it in the bag. I will walk them through all of this in class. This message is simply so you understand what we are doing in the classroom and why they may ask you for a Ziploc bag to grow mold. We will check the results for 12 days.
