Both classes have MAP testing this week. If your student starts their day in Ms. Boelter’s class, they will MAP test math on Monday and reading on Wednesday. If your student starts their day in Mrs. Caskie’s class, they will MAP reading test on Monday and math on Wednesday.

Last week, students conducted some fun engineering experiments and worked to stop Agent Kay Oss from disrupting their order of operations. This week, students will complete tasks that will ready them for 6th grade math.

We will also start promotion practice. On Friday, 5th grade students will get to work with a K-4 teacher and help run K-4 field day. (Parent/Guardian attendance information: here.) After field day, students will enjoy the Ober Talent Show. 5th graders will then participate in their own field day on the following Monday, the 13th.

Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week-May 6-10 (Don’t forget our amazing specialists!)

Promotion

Our promotion is on May 20th. Students will attend promotion, attend a clapout, and then be ready for you to sign them out.

Curriculum

We have no state testing this week! Yay. We will finish out our state testing next week when we take the MAP reading and math tests.

This week, we’ll work on preparing for 6th grade in both science and math. On Tuesday and Wednesday, students will take a cumulative math reassessment which they can use to better their scores on any summative assessment. The morning class will take their assessment on Wednesday, and the afternoon class will take it on Tuesday. I will meeting with students on Monday and Tuesday so they know which standards for which they still need to show mastery, should they choose to better that score. We also started building tiny houses last week. Students will be asked to find the area, perimeter, and volume of their houses. We will extend concepts further for students who finish ahead of the other students.

We will also start some fun science experiments. We have one science unit summative assessment left, and students will either take that this week, or at the beginning of next week.

Thanks so much for your support as we close out this final year in elementary. It’s been a privilege sharing time with your students and I am the better for it. This week will be an extraordinary week.

Curriculum

This week, students will continue to work on their reading projects in Mrs. Caskie’s class. In math, we’ll review this year’s standards and start extending those standards into next year’s content. On Monday, we will also engage in a hands on science experiment with mixture and solutions. This is not something we will be able to recreate if your student is absent, so we hope to have all students present. We will also start working on the water system in science at the end of the week. Students do have their SBAC science part 1 and 2 this week, on Tuesday and Wednesday. These are our final two SBAC tests.

Please remember students do not have school on Friday as it is a district contingency day.

Thanks so much for your continued support as we get closer to this year’s end. We appreciate it!

SBAC Testing

Our SBAC testing days this week are Monday and Wednesday (I double checked!):

This is what we have left:

Curriculum

Your students worked incredibly hard this week and I am so proud of them. We even had the opportunity to patriciate in a mini baby shower for Mrs. Caskie who is now on maternity leave. Know that we’ve been planning for this leave since the beginning of the year. We’ve got this!

Please note the SBAC schedule above. This week, between our testing days, we will complete our unit in geometry in math. Students will also have additional time to complete that ecosystem assessment we started last week. In coding, students should be finishing up their final projects.

We will have announcements about the end of the year coming throughout the weeks to come. Please make sure to check in on Dojo from time to time so you do not miss anything.

Thanks so much!

Curriculum

Last week, we started our SBAC state testing. Your students really showed perseverance and worked hard. This week, we have the last of our ELA tests. We’ve been reinforcing positive mindsets and making sure students know to do their best, but one test does not define them. We will test on Wednesday this week.

Here’s our schedule for the rest of this month:

We will have flipped schedules on Thursday and Friday this week, as 4th grade is testing. Those schedule changes are noted on the digital planner.

In math, we’ll review some of our big concepts for the year which will allow for some natural reassessment. I spoke with students about reviewing their progress reports and determining which grades they would like to improve to show mastery. We may start our final unit on Geometry this week, but we will make sure to check student’s mindsets and capacity for effective learning before we start that unit.

We will be viewing the eclipse on Monday. We will have appropriate glasses and we’ll review that procedure before engaging in that activity. We will also finish up our ecosystem units in which students learn to truly understand the difference between a food web and a food cycle, including how to ecologists attempt to repair those ecosystems that are failing.

Finally, we’ll close out our coding unit with final projects. In SEL, we’ll continue to focus on integrity and honesty.

Thanks for taking part in our Top Secret project. I love watching their smiles of surprise and comfort as they read the messages you sent in. Those connections make all the difference in the world!

This week students will take their first SBAC test. Please remember that bed times and good breakfast make a huge difference in student conference and performance. Thank you so much for filling out the Top Secret documents. We’re so excited to share them with students this week.

Students will take their analyzing and plotting data assessment in math this week as well. As we work through our final content, students will also have the opportunity to reassess in areas they feel they’ve mastered since we originally covered the material. In science, we’ll look to close out our unit on ecosystems.

This time of year is a delicate balance. We need to make sure students understand that working hard, showing and checking their work with integrity, and doing their best is what truly matters. We do our best to prepare them to feel comfortable with the material on which they’re being tested so that anxiety cannot find root in the amazing confidence they’ve developed. We appreciate all you’ve done to help us encourage your students and let them know they are more than a test score.

Our testing schedule is below. A link to my post with SBAC letters can be found here. Please make sure students wear comfortable clothing and keep accessories to a minimum. We will ask students to place all bracelets, watches, etc, into their backpack that will be kept in a separate part of the room for testing. Thank you so much!

Announcements

Please make sure to check your student’s Friday Folder. There were three items sent home on Friday, including our SBAC testing schedule and communication from Ms. Baker regarding testing (these are also linked below. Additionally, our Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader announcement came home. Currently, we have a very small number of RSVPs for that event on Wednesday. You can RSVP here: Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader. If that number stays low, we’ll likely cancel the event. I will make sure to Dojo and send a message via Infinite Campus if we determine we need to cancel.

Curriculum

On Monday, students will take their Summative Conversions Assessment. On Tuesday, we’ll start our penultimate unit on interpreting data. Our first lesson in this unit is analyzing line plots. It is a short but intense unit. We will finish that unit on Thursday.

In science, we will continue our journey of understanding ecosystems. This week we’ll discuss why scientists argue and how we can construct good arguments about plants in ecosystems. We are also nearing conclusion of our coding project and many students have completed their final project. In SEL, we’re continuing to work through that unit on integrity.

Here’s a quick access screen shot of our SBAC testing days. Please note that we will be MAP testing on May 6 and May 8.

Thanks so much! We’re going to have an amazing week!

Curriculum

Before we left for break, we started a unit on customary and metric units of conversion, with a little bit of time conversion mixed in. The great thing about these lessons are that students can use them in everything they do. The big concept in this unit is understanding that we use multiplication or division to convert from smaller units to larger units or vice versa. It is a great unit where we revisit whole number, decimal, and fraction multiplication and division as well. The first few lessons are rough because it is a big concept with sizeable computation. As we progress through this week, it should become easier for students. We will work through metric units of measure and units of time this week before reviewing with problem solving on Friday. Should all go according to plan, we’ll take that assessment on Monday of next week.

In science we continued to investigate matter and how it cycles through our ecosystems and habitats. We’ll continue that learning this week as well.

Our SEL lessons this week are focused on integrity and honesty.

Upcoming State Testing

Our SBAC and MAP testing windows this year will start in April and continue through that month. Please remember to get those Top Secret yellow envelopes back to us this week if you have not turned them in. I loved the ideas some of you had of sharing them with relatives and friends to fill out at Spring Break. I’ll be reaching out to those from whom I’ve not yet received them this week.

Testing season is not any teacher’s favorite season, least of all this teacher. Through the years, I’ve developed some strategies to help students feel better about the process. For now, state testing is going nowhere. With that in mind, I’ve worked hard to make sure that I give students the best opportunity to be successful. Success is a subjective word. It is so subjective, that when we enter our classroom each year, we sit down and define what success is.

When we start, most students will say success in school is getting a 3 or a 4. By the time we finish the conversation, and after the first few weeks of school, my goal is that they know that success is not measured by a number in a gradebook or on a standardized test. It is working hard, making mistakes, trying when things are difficult, and ultimately make significant measurable growth, or understanding what we’re learning so well that we could teach someone else.

So, what does success look like when we sit down to take standardized tests? From my subjective viewpoint, it is providing students strategies and confidence so that when they sit down to take these tests, they can do so with the least amount of anxiety so that they feel good about their performance and showing all that they know. If we can help students with this success criteria, this testing season will be a success to me. With all of that said, we do not prepare for state testing in our classroom. Rather, we ask questions that lead to that understanding all year, and hopefully build those skills so they are ready to show off when they start their SBAC and MAP testing.

That said, we want you to know what your students experience, so we started a parent night called Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? We will engage in some friendly competition with 5th grade SBAC questions. Most importantly, we’ll share some testing anxiety tips, sample testing packets, and general tips about making this process as low key as possible. This year, this will take Wednesday, March 27 at 5:00 pm at Ober. All of your favorite 5th grade teachers will be there. I’ll make a separate post early this week with a flyer with all of the details.

Curriculum

We learned a lot last week! Students took their volume assessment on Friday. There are a few students who have requested a little more time with that assessment. I will provide that time on Monday, and then we’ll jump into conversions.

Over the next week, and into the week following spring break, students will be converting all kinds of measurement. These conversions will include customary (U.S.) conversions of weight, capacity, and length, as well as metric conversions of the same. Please point out every day conversions to your students. We all use converters through internet searches, and students will always have a conversion chart while making these conversions, but challenge them to calculate those conversions mathematically. In science, we’ll continue working with our ecosystems and Friday, we will engage in a Pi Day STEM challenge.

Since we do not have school on 3/14, and your students know how much Ms. Boelter loves the number Pi, (my favorite number is 3.14 or 14) we will be engaging in some Pi Day themed challenges. Students are encouraged to bring items that contain pi, or anything circular. See my dojo message for more information on that! We are going to have so much fun this week.

If you have any of the following items and can send them in, we will be using them in our STEM challenge:

  • Cardboard Strips – any size, students can use them as a base for their design 6 inches by 4 inches would be ideal
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Rubberbands
  • Wooden Rods
  • Q tips
  • Plastic Cups
  • Laundry Clips
  • Straws
  • Toothpicks
  • Old CDS

Upcoming Events

  • 3/4 Nevada Reading Week
  • 3/8 Pi Day in Ms. Boelter’s Room
  • 3/10 Math League Competition at Ober
  • 3/11-3/15 Spring Break
  • 3/18 School Resumes

This week, students will continue to explore volume, and specifically how it relates to rectangular prisms and irregular shapes. By the end of the unit, students will be able to find the volume of multiple irregular shapes, and then add them together to get a total volume for the entire shape. In science, we’ve started drafting a scientific evidenced based response about jaguars in a their ecoysystems.

Students are completing daily check-ins to assess how their progressing within our unit. Please ask them how they’re progressing. We are in unit 11 of the enVisions workbook, if your student needs additional practice. I’ve linked a video below that also explains how we find these volumes, step by step.
