04/19/20 – Distance Learning

Hi parents! I wanted to drop a quick post to provide times of live lessons, but I am still waiting on a couple of teacher meeting confirmations before I can make that schedule. Tentatively, I’ve set whole group lessons for Tuesday-Friday at 10 a.m. There may be one change, but I’ll know for sure early tomorrow morning. Our lessons will be posted on Google Classroom as they have been the last 3 weeks with a weekly calendar. Thank you!

Live Lessons

Hi parents! This week, students can participate in live lessons tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. and Thursday at 10:00 a.m. We will have our morning meeting at 9:15 a.m. on Friday live as well. We will do all of these via Webex. That download can be found here: https://www.webex.com/ They can also just meet via a web browser (google chrome, firefox) if you allow it to access the microphone and camera. I will send the invite at 9:30 a.m. We will start our lesson no later than 10:05. In app stores, the app is Cisco Webex Meetings.

Tomorrow’s lesson just requires your student and their mind. On Thursday, we will start talking about state floats. Each student will be assigned a state and they can create a float out of the materials. We will present them during our live sessions. If students would rather record their presentation, that will be an option via FlipGrid.

With Kotter in Mind, Welcome Back

I hope you enjoyed a wonderful sequesterish Spring Break. I know that the break was exceptionally well timed for my family. It was much needed and we are definitely feeling recharged.

Recharge Clip Art - Clip Art Library

I want to give you an idea of what the coming weeks will look like, indefinitely and until we are are told we need to report to the building. I will continue to use Discord for morning meeting and text chat. I will also be recording lesson videos which I will post weekly. During the week, we will whole group meet for at least two lessons so students can hear and see each other, should they have that desire.

I will use Webex for this process. As of this morning, all of these features work under CCSD’s Go Guardian system. However, things often change. Please understand that when CCSD dictates a change, I must follow. With that in mind, I’ve created a Facebook Page where parents can post questions and ask for guidance. I will respond to those questions at least twice daily. If you prefer email, Remind, or any other form of communication, I will always respond to those questions as well. That page is https://www.facebook.com/Ms-B-in-Class-112337217091243

On Tuesday, April 14, we will start our day with our morning meeting. Students will have a calendar for their work just like we did in the week prior to Spring Break, found by logging into Google Classroom, and students can complete the week’s work in a way that works with your schedule. I will also be scheduling small group and individual lessons weekly.

I miss all of you and all of your students. I cannot wait to get to work and chat with them again soon!

Activities Upon Return

When we return from Spring Break, there a few activities I would like to complete with your students. I am going to post the supplies needed now, in case your student would like to participate in some live experiments. Please know that if you have ANYTHING that remotely fits the description in the materials list, put those aside for use. I do not want you to have to go to the store. I have a lot of these items, or similar items in my house.

Please don’t spoil the science surprises. Check back here throughout Spring Break for more.

Items students will need:

  • Some sort of box (an amazon, Kleenex, or a shoe box will do)
  • Construction paper, or lined paper upon which they can color

Storm Spotters – Thursday Afternoon

This afternoon, I will presenting a livestream lesson. I’ve emailed materials needed for this lesson. Students will either need the PDFs attached to this post printed, or a piece of paper for each of those pdfs. I’ve included a video on how to fold the piece of paper for the Storm Spotter’s Guide here.

Supplies for this lesson include:

  • The Storm Spotters Guide or a blank piece of paper
  • Scissors
  • The Will It Storm Printout or 2 pieces of paper to handwrite their answers.

School Closure Extended

Parents, you may have just received this email as well. Please note the following from CCSD:

Following today’s directive by Governor Steve Sisolak, the school closures in the Clark County School District (CCSD) will extend until April 30, 2020.

CCSD will continue implementing distance education in accordance with guidance provided by the Nevada Department of Education (NDE). CCSD is actively deploying devices and addressing connectivity issues to reduce inequities preventing as many as 60% of our students from participating in learning opportunities through digital platforms.

Our food distribution sites will maintain vital services for our families as we continue to explore expanded services to meet the needs of our families. We will remain engaged with our business and community partners to implement solutions to our challenges. They have offered their support for our families without hesitation and I truly appreciate their spirit of service through these trying times.

It is in the face of these challenging times that CCSD employees have shown their utmost commitment to our community. Our teachers have been developing and implementing innovative instructional opportunities for our students. My highest admiration is extended to every member of our CCSD team.

I want to assure our parents, students, and employees that we will continue addressing barriers to access education and services, and sustain frequent communication with our communities.

Safety and health remain our top priority. I am confident we will emerge from this stronger.

That Last Week Before Spring Break

Morning Meeting

Will will continue to have morning meeting in Discord. I’ll be in most days between 8:45 and 9:15. Encourage students to stop in and share their good news and bad news. 🙂

Curriculum

I hope you are all healthy and rested! As I mentioned previously, we teamed up this week in grade 3 to bring you a complete schedule. We’ve created a completion slide for your students for the week. As students complete this, I will be available on Discord for voice chat or for text chat. I encourage you to make an account if you’d like and ask any questions you may have as well. I even made a parent chat text and voice channel.

This is our schedule for the week. It is also on Google Classroom. We have a few new programs we will be using, but know I am here to help:

All of these are set up in Google Classroom with all needed links in our Current Distance Learning topic. It is right at the top under the Classwork Tab as seen pictured below:

Daily Lessons

I will prepare and delivery one live lesson a day. I know the kids really enjoy working on the STEM stuff together. I have life skill and STEM lessons planned for this week as follows:

Monday: 9:30 a.m.

Tuesday: 10:00 a.m.

Wednesday: 1:00 p.m.

Thursday: 1:00 p.m.

Friday: 10:00 a.m.

Your Schedules

Know that we’re aware that some of you have different schedules based on your work shifts. As we have converted to distance learning, know I am aware that you have a lot on your plate. We may learn differently and at different times during this process. We are working with synchronous, semi-synchronous, and asynchronous distance learning delivery. Please set your learning pace with your student based on your schedule.
