Welcome New 3rd Graders!

By now, many of you have likely received my welcome letter and supply list.  I am so excited to have all of your students in my class this year.  We are going to do amazing things!  I know your student may be nervous.  It’s okay to be nervous.  We will figure this out together!

DOTS - Welcome

I occasionally tweet and post on Instagram over the summer.  Both feeds are located on the right side of this page (or bottom depending on your browser/OS)!  I look forward to seeing you soon!

Know I Value Your Trust

Parents and Guardians,

I wanted to thank you one more time for all that you’ve given to me this year; in so many ways.  I can’t properly put into words how much I’ve learned from your students.  Southern Highlands is a great community.  Stuckey is an extraordinary school.  Your students created something even more substantial than their community and school in our classroom this year.  They created a culture of kindness and respect.

When no one was looking, they did the right thing.  They stood up for the kids who were alone.  They picked up, even if they didn’t make the mess.  They knew that they were all different, and they celebrated those differences.  I know all of this starts with the strong roots you’ve planted at home.

Thanks for making this so much more than a single school year.  I love fighting dragons with your students.  I know they will achieve great things in the years to come!

All of your student accounts will be active over the summer.  Students can stay fresh with any of the websites we used in class.  If you’d like me to send you a jpg picture of their login information (the card I laminated for them this year), please let me know and I will send it.  I am also updating Khan Academy with your student MAPs scores, so all of that curriculum will be appropriately on level.  Please email me with questions!

Our Last Week

Oh boy!  This is it, right?  I am having a hard time preparing for this week because I feel so incredibly attached to these students and to their parents.

The Important Stuff

  • We will have no homework this week.
  • Our balloon pop for Monday is a Hollywood Theme
  • Our Lemonade Wars will go live on Wednesday and we hope all of you can come.
  • Thursday is a half day.  Students can not bring backpacks.
  • Report cards go home with students on Thursday.

Lemonade Wars

Please know you can come to this event if you are not badged.

Wednesday, May 22nd, is our Lemonade War. We invite ALL Families to join us for this event, starting at 2:15. You can enter through the back gates near the bus lane and you DO NOT have to be badged. First thing next Wednesday morning, your child will be making enough Lemonade (3 oz.) cups to serve approximately 350 family members, 2nd graders, and 4th graders. We sent home a list of ALL items needed on Friday, so that you can pick up needed items over the weekend.  We understand that sometimes students commit to something without consulting parents.  If your student isn’t able to bring an item assigned by their group, please let me know ASAP and I will pick it up.

All materials must be at the school at 8:55 on Wednesday morning because we will start the day by making the lemonade.

I’ve also created a signup genius for the items that we need to serve lemonade.  The coolers will be used and returned.  Thanks for stepping up as you have done all year!

Thank You

I am sure I am forgetting a few things I need to communicate to you about this week, so watch for updates here.  I will say it 100 times in the coming days, but know I mean it with full intent. Thank you for giving me the privilege of teaching your child.  This year has been an exceptional one for me in so many ways.  The words “thank you” seem inadequate.

Balloon Pop and Lemonade Wars

Our balloon pop today revealed Out of This World Day for tomorrow. Our day is Space themed!

Every student brought home an ingredients responsibility chart for Friday’s lemonade wars. Students will bring in just enough for one pitcher. Once they taste test, we will send home a sign up list for all that they need (Friday afternoon).

WE ARE DONE TESTING!!! YAY!!

Stuffed Animal Day & No Homework

Our balloon pop today revealed stuffed animal day for tomorrow.  Students can bring a stuffed animal that will fit in their backpacks.  There is no homework because we have our last SBAC tomorrow!  Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas!

Balloon Pop! Bubble Day

We popped our balloon for tomorrow.  Tomorrow is Bubble Day.  Learning will be centered around bubbly ideas, and students can bring gum which they can chew in my class.  We will also go outside and blow some bubbles.

Balloon Pop for Monday & Lemonade Wars

Students popped their second balloon on Friday and revealed Hobby Day for Monday’s theme.  Students can bring in an artifact that represents one of their favorite hobbies. Please do not send in something of significant value.  A picture of a student participating in their favorite hobby is a great idea.  Tomorrow, our work will center around hobbies that we all share, and students will have a chance to share their artifact with the class.

Students make their first batch of lemonade (for testing purposes) on Friday.  The 3rd grade teachers will reach out to you after meeting one more time with your students tomorrow about what they will need.  Each group may need different ingredients.  I’ll post here and make sure that list gets in your child’s go folder.  Some lists may come from other classes as we are switching for this activity.

We have our last test on Wednesday (YAY!)!  I am happy students will be able to back to a regular schedule.

If you have any pictures of school events featuring your student or our class, please share them with me.  I am putting something together for the end of the year, and I would love to include them.

I’ve only assigned homework for Monday this week as we test on Wednesday.  I’ve attached it here.

First Balloon & More

We popped our first balloon.  Tomorrow is Around The World Day.  Students can bring in a small artifact from around the world.  It is also Disney Day, so it it a free dress day.

We test SBAC Math in the morning.  Your students are ready for this.  I’m proud of all the hard work they’ve put in.

Students have no homework tonight!

May 6, 2019

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.  Thankfully we have two SBAC tests under our belt with only three more to go.  We test on Tuesday and Friday this week.  Please make sure your student has a good breakfast and gets plenty of sleep on Monday and Thursday night.  Our remaining testing calendar is as follows:

  • 5/07: SBAC ELA Part 2
  • 5/10: SBAC Math CAT
  • 5/15: SBAC Math Performance Task

As we countdown the final days of school, we will pop a balloon each day and have a themed day the following day.  I’ll do my best to let you all know what the balloon pop was as soon as we pop them.  This will start at the end of this week.

We will have paper math homework this week and I’ll ask that students read for 20 minutes each night.

Thanks to everyone who joined me at Free Comic Book day.  I love that the industry created this day to encourage literacy across the U.S.

The Lemonade War

We are starting our new novel, “The Lemonade War”, and our students are really excited. This is going to be a great novel to finish up our school year. It is about two siblings who try to outdo each other while selling lemonade. They come up with some very creative ways to promote their business.

We are also going to tie this novel into our economics unit in Social Studies. Your child has been assigned to a team and they are going to have an actual Lemonade War. This will include creating a business plan, a recipe for lemonade, and promoting their business to students and parents.

To make this activity a success, we are asking for your help. Each group will be required to create a lemonade recipe and business. In a few weeks, your child will ask you to help supply different items that need to be used in their lemonade recipe. Keep an eye out for the items that your child and their group need. We do need some items donated before then. If you are able to send in: small, bathroom size Dixie cups, gift cards to the Dollar Tree to purchase supplies, or gift cards to Smiths, Costco, etc. to purchase items we would really appreciate it. If any leftover gift cards remain, they will be used towards an end of the year celebration. We will also be sending out a Sign Up Genius Link for remaining items that are needed.

We will be working with all third grade classes on this project and we know, with your support, it will be a huge success. Please save the date for May 22nd, at 2:15, near the 4 square courts for our Lemonade War!

Thanks from all of your 3rd grade teachers, Mrs. Bedich, Mrs. Boelter, Ms. Winslow, Mrs. Escobar, and Ms. Wizig.

As we turn the corner to our final days of the school year, please reach out to me if you have any questions.  Thanks for being amazing parents.  This year is one I will never forget.  I am so thankful that you trusted me with the education of your child, and I’m appreciative of how much you’ve supported us on our journey.  Have a great week!

Teacher Requests and May 4th

We were in testing in the morning yesterday and had our specials after lunch.  Parent request forms for next year are in your mailboxes today.  Thanks!

Remember on May 4th, I will be at Action Comic and Games all day long.  They give out 3 free comics per person, and Stuckey Students get a little bit extra.  I am usually behind the free comic table, though I do rotate through the store.  I’d love to see you!

We test again on Thursday, May 2.  Your students did a great job on their first test.  I know they will rock this one, too.  Thanks for all of your support!
