Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  I am so thankful for all of my students and their parents. Thank you for being helpful and supportive during our 3rd grade year!

A few students have emailed/messaged about over the break homework.  I intended on giving specific homework for completion over the break, but I had a a number of parents email me letting me know that they would not have access to technology.  In light of that fact, I’ll ask each student to spend some time on Lexia or Freckle, Prodigy, XtraMath, and ST Math.  If each student completed 20 minutes of XtraMath a day, it would be great!

I hope you enjoy the rest of your break and I can’t wait to see your students on Monday.  🙂

Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse

The new animated Spider-Man movie opens on December 14.  This movie features Gwen Stacy as Spider Gwen and Miles Morales, the current Spider-Man in the comics.  All characters who have become Spider-Man will have an appearance in the film as well.

I’d like to go with your kids if they would like to join me.  I as thinking of matinee on December 15.  I think Town Square would probably be the easiest theater at which we could meet.  I will create a sign up and we’ll see how many Superheroes we can fit into the theater at once.

If you already know of game/activity scheduling conflicts, let me know and I we can work on a different date.  I think it would be amazing to experience this with your students.  We can write about comparing and contrasting Spider-Man characters, too!

Pie and Family Picnic

Thanks so much for all of the pie!

Students brought a flyer home today reminding you of our Family Picnic tomorrow.  Our class will start lunch at 12:00. If you would like to bring a blanket on which you and your students can sit while eating, please do so. Also, Papa Johns will have pizza available on campus for purchase.

We ate a lot of pie! Students loved our pie extravaganza today. Many of them tried cheddar cheese with apple pie. I was impressed! We have at least five pies left over and students will have some more tomorrow.

I will have a checkout outside at the family picnic if you’d like to take your student with you. If you are planning on taking them, please let me know as I will have them bring their backpacks with them.

Thanks for all of your support! This week has been awesome!

Homework 11-13-18

All students must do fluency each night.  It is at the front of the packet.

Students have the choice of completing digital homework or paper homework like most weeks.  However, if they choose not to do the paper homework, they must complete the Freckle reading assignments Thunderstorms and Bats by Friday.  There are two articles.  For math, students have time assignments in all programs.  If they choose to do paper homework, there are sheets in order for Tuesday through Thursday.

If you have questions, send me a message on Classcraft or via email.  Have a great week!

Next week, we will close a few reading standards and finalize our understanding of how a character or narrator’s point of view move a story along.  We will finish our personal narratives in writing and start a performance task assessment.

In math, we work start a unit in which students will tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. This is often a tough transition as we have been working with multiplication and division for some time.  Ask them to tell you what time it is as often as possible.  Also, PLEASE make sure your students continue to practice math facts. This will be part of their homework as we continue into other standards.

We will present our totem poles to the class next week.  They are beautiful! We will also work on comparing and contrasting different indigenous tribes of North America.  We will also close out our primary election.  Ask your student to which candy they’ve dedicated their support.  They are all quite excited at the prospect of campaigning.

Homework:

Next week students will have a homework packet.  They can also still complete digital homework, but I would like students to read the article for reading next week. I would also like ALL students to complete fluency.  I’ll have a homework packet on the website by the end of the weekend as well.

Thanks to all of our Veterans for your service!  Enjoy your three day weekend!

It’s All About the Pie not Pi…

Parents,

Next Thursday, November 15, we will have a Pie Extravaganza in our classroom after lunch.  I know that for some, pie is the best part of Thanksgiving meal, so why not have a pie party?

If you have a favorite pie, homemade or store bought, we would love to try it together as a class as we make our way toward the fall break. (We can never have too much pumpkin pie!)

I’ve created a Google doc on which you can sign up for pie/drinks/utensils.  Thanks for all that you do!

Totem Poles – Colonial Day

I wanted to send a quick reminder that our totem poles are due tomorrow.  Thanks to all the students who have already brought them in!

Colonial Time in 3rd Grade

Wednesday, November 14th, will be quite an exciting day for our kiddos! Students will be learning about Colonial Life and will have a “Colonial Day” on Wednesday. All 3rd grade students will rotate into our 5 classrooms where they will participate in a Colonial Activity. We are very excited about the chance to make history come alive and show our students how life was back then!!

Your child will be learning about life in New England (past and present), Political Parties from the past, Native Americans, and Colonists… just to name a few. Some of Wednesday’s activities will include writing with feathered quills, weaving mats, and reenacting life of the colonists.

Thank you for your continued support. Third grade wouldn’t be the same without you!

If you have old buttons, my rotation will can use them to create a colonial time toy.  Thanks in advance for any and all donations. 🙂

Totem Poles and Division

Happy November!

I sent some totem pole guidelines home with your students midweek.  On Friday, I stressed to them that they need to work on this project.  We love all of the guidance you parents have given on our first few projects this year.  Please continue to guide your students, but insist that they create this project with their hands.

My grading rubric and requirement outline is here:  Totem Pole 3rd

We stack all of the boxes on top of each other in our hall, so please do not put anything on the top or bottom of the box.  For example, once the box pictured below is covered, the Puma top of the box should be blank/not decorated, as another box will stack directly on top of it.

Requirements (see the rubric above):

  • You need to use a tissue box or small too Medium sized shoe box (please no other boxes bigger than these because they won’t fit once stacked up on each other)
  • Decorate the sides of the box only. Do not decorate the top or bottom because the boxes will be stacked on top of each other and we wouldn’t want to cover up any decoration
  • Your last name must be written on one of the sides.  It is a family activity so last names will be used to represent each student.
  • All work; writing, drawings, etc, put onto the box must be neat and legible.  These are going to be displayed in the hallway for everyone to see so you want others to be able to read it.
  • Decorate your box with your family’s hobbies, interests, any favorites (sports, movies, games, songs)
  • Include your family’s heritage (colors, flags, maps)
    • Example:  My family is predominantly from Germany and Scotland.  I could both of these flags on the box.
  • Include any family tradition you may have in the month of November (Thanksgiving, going to a specific place to gather, observing any tradition that your family engages in, even if it is something new your family has created for this generation)
  • Include family photos or a diary entry about a tradition your family has during this time of year that is memorable to you.

Ideas:

  • Use lots of different materials (feathers, glitter, scrap book paper, beads, sequins, pom-poms, yard, buttons, foam, etc.) to create something special

This week is a shorter week for students as we will not be in school on Tuesday for Election Day, and students have Wednesday off for conferences.  If you have not scheduled your conference, please let me know what days work for you so I can make sure we meet and discuss your student’s progress.

We will wrap up division on Monday and then move into time and elapsed time.  Again, I know I am a broken record, but please have your students practice their math facts.  We worked on division math facts on Friday and students who did not know their 8s and 9s really struggled with the assignment.  Let’s give them that confidence they need to continue being successful in math.  If you’ve lost your flash cards, or just need some, please let me know.  I’m happy to help.

In reading, we finished up character traits and will start a unit in which students will work to distinguish their own point of view from that of the narrator or those of the characters.  In writing, we will wrap up our personal narratives.

We will also start reading about many different indigenous peoples of the Americas. Finally, we’ve started our chewy/chocolate election, and students will work to better understand how our election system works as we go through this year’s election in November.

I am excited for a fun November of learning and creating with your students!

Spooky Buffet & Halloween

Hi parents, please send in your spooky buffet items with your students tomorrow.  If it is a perishable item, they can bring it up to my classroom right away.  Remember that we have Trunk or Treat at 2:20 as well, and parents can join through the back gate for that event! Thanks for being awesome!

Candy Election!

If you’re anything like me, you’ve had your fill of those election flyers you have received in the mail over the past few months.  Good news!  I have a place for them besides recycling.  🙂

We are going to have a candy election in conjunction with November’s election.  If you have flyers that you have not thrown away, please send them in with your students.  We will have a primary with crunchy and chewy, and then a general election.  The flyers will be a great reference for students as they create their own flyers for their favorite candy.
