Happy November!
I sent some totem pole guidelines home with your students midweek. On Friday, I stressed to them that they need to work on this project. We love all of the guidance you parents have given on our first few projects this year. Please continue to guide your students, but insist that they create this project with their hands.
My grading rubric and requirement outline is here: Totem Pole 3rd
We stack all of the boxes on top of each other in our hall, so please do not put anything on the top or bottom of the box. For example, once the box pictured below is covered, the Puma top of the box should be blank/not decorated, as another box will stack directly on top of it.

Requirements (see the rubric above):
- You need to use a tissue box or small too Medium sized shoe box (please no other boxes bigger than these because they won’t fit once stacked up on each other)
- Decorate the sides of the box only. Do not decorate the top or bottom because the boxes will be stacked on top of each other and we wouldn’t want to cover up any decoration
- Your last name must be written on one of the sides. It is a family activity so last names will be used to represent each student.
- All work; writing, drawings, etc, put onto the box must be neat and legible. These are going to be displayed in the hallway for everyone to see so you want others to be able to read it.
- Decorate your box with your family’s hobbies, interests, any favorites (sports, movies, games, songs)
- Include your family’s heritage (colors, flags, maps)
- Example: My family is predominantly from Germany and Scotland. I could both of these flags on the box.
- Include any family tradition you may have in the month of November (Thanksgiving, going to a specific place to gather, observing any tradition that your family engages in, even if it is something new your family has created for this generation)
- Include family photos or a diary entry about a tradition your family has during this time of year that is memorable to you.
Ideas:
- Use lots of different materials (feathers, glitter, scrap book paper, beads, sequins, pom-poms, yard, buttons, foam, etc.) to create something special
This week is a shorter week for students as we will not be in school on Tuesday for Election Day, and students have Wednesday off for conferences. If you have not scheduled your conference, please let me know what days work for you so I can make sure we meet and discuss your student’s progress.
We will wrap up division on Monday and then move into time and elapsed time. Again, I know I am a broken record, but please have your students practice their math facts. We worked on division math facts on Friday and students who did not know their 8s and 9s really struggled with the assignment. Let’s give them that confidence they need to continue being successful in math. If you’ve lost your flash cards, or just need some, please let me know. I’m happy to help.

In reading, we finished up character traits and will start a unit in which students will work to distinguish their own point of view from that of the narrator or those of the characters. In writing, we will wrap up our personal narratives.
We will also start reading about many different indigenous peoples of the Americas. Finally, we’ve started our chewy/chocolate election, and students will work to better understand how our election system works as we go through this year’s election in November.
I am excited for a fun November of learning and creating with your students!
