Book Report Poster

Good morning!

I’ve had a few parents forward questions about our book report poster due on Thursday.  Students need to complete the book poster on the book we finished in class, How to be Cool in the Third Grade.  We will do another book report later in the year and it will be the student’s choice.  Thank you!

Field Trip Tomorrow!

There is a chance for rain tomorrow.  Please send your student with a hoodie or an umbrella tomorrow in case we run into inclimate weather.  Additionally, please send a lunch as we will eat after lunch is served.  Thank you!  We are going to have fun!

This week we published our first piece of writing!  Your students worked hard.  We also learned how to read a rubric and self assess.  Next week we will start working on our personal narrative unit.

In math we completed our unit on multiplying by a factor of 10.  Next week, we will jump into properties of operations as strategies to multiply.  This is a really tough unit and requires students to apply computation skills.  We will find some inventive ways to drive these concepts home.  Please continue to practice math facts nightly as knowing their facts gives them the confidence they need to succeed as we transition out of multiplication.

In reading, we completed our unit on central message.  Students will take that assessment next week.   Next week we will work on summarizing key details before moving into informational text features.

In science, we had some fun with motion.  Your students built slides and tested different objects with gravity, friction, and weight.  They really enjoyed this lesson!  I posted some pictures on the parent announcement portion of Classcraft.

I sent home progress reports with all students today.  Please fill them out and return them at your earliest convenience.  Please note if your student is missing an assignment, I do have some papers in the no name basket.  Also, please remember that we have a lot of time left in this semester.  Students are getting used to the expectations and demands of 3rd grade.  We will continue to work toward our goals through December when report cards are issued.

We celebrated a lot of personal successes in XtraMath and Lexia this week.  Thanks for keeping education a priority in your home.  Have a great weekend!

Book Poster

Today I sent home instructions for a book report poster with your students.  This poster relates to the book we’ve been reading in class, How to be Cool in the Third Grade.  I also sent a rubric so students are aware of the assignment expectations.  This poster is due on October 4.  They are creating a poster that could be used to promote this book as a movie, if it were turned into a movie.

The poster should include:

  • The title of the book in large letters and the author of the book.
  • A picture of an important scene from the book (do not duplicate the front cover of the book.)
  • A brief summary of the book, that will make people want to see the movie, but does not give too much away.
  • The names of the actors that will play the main characters (you can use real actors or you can make up names.)
  • 2-3 brief comments from critics (you can make these up.)

Please let me know if you have any questions.  Thank you!  Have fun with this!

9/24/18

Dear Parents,

We had another fun filled week of learning in our classroom. We celebrated pirates, learned about sequencing, revised our writing with more interesting words, and started to tackle multiplication properties and multiplying by 10. We also coded for the first time with code.org. Finally, we had our first boss battle, and almost defeated a dragon with math facts before narrowly escaping with our characters’ respective lives.

We reviewed our reading assessment from last week in class and talked about expectations for answering completely. Many students made sure to cite text evidence and explain how the text evidence they cited supported their work. This is a skill we will work on all year long, and one that will be assessed again as the year progresses.

Next week, we will work the central message in fiction, establish how to determine themes of a text, and analyze theme development. We will also work on summarizing key supporting details and ideas.

In writing, we will start peer editing and work toward finalizing our writing pieces. When our work is finished, we will share them in our author’s chair.

In math, we will continue honing new strategies for multiplication. We will work to strengthen our multiplication by 10 skills, and maybe face another foe with math facts.

Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15 through October 15. While we celebrate and learn about Hispanic Heritage, we will examine historical texts, dive into cultural history, and eventually partake in a celebration of the diverse knowledge we’ve gained. If you would like to contribute to this celebration, I welcome your help, time, or decoration donation.

Thanks to everyone who has turned in field trip paperwork.  More thanks for all the volunteers for field trips.  I’m currently conferring with the grade level to determine if we need additional chaperones for other classes.  Once we make that determination, I’ll reach out to each of you.  I will do my best to make contact with you by Thursday morning to confirm your attendance.

If you’ve not turned in your field trip paperwork, please get that turned in as soon as possible.  I have added that paperwork to my forms page if you need them.

Many thanks for helping your students navigate this transition from learning to read to reading to learn. You are amazing!!

Ident-A-Kid Packets

Tonight your students will bring home an Ident-A-Kid packet.  Please send it back in tomorrow if you would like your student to have their picture taken and ID created.  Tomorrow is the Ident-A-Kid picture day and there are no makeups.  Thank you!

Epic!

Parents,

I wanted to thank all of you for making our Pirate Day Soiree amazing!  We listened to sea shanties, talked like a pirate, did some treasure math, and may have danced like a pirate, too.  We had a great time, and your students enjoyed our celebration.

Speaking of Epic!, have you found yourself in a situation where your student wants to read but doesn’t have anything on the shelf?  I’ve created student logins for all students on Epic! books.  There is a great National Geographic section and equally good fiction, including pirate books which really fit into today’s theme.

Your students will receive updated login cards for all of our sites at home this week, and Epic! will be on them.  There is also a free app for those nights when you are taxiing your students from one event to another.  Please let me know if you have any questions!

Don’t Forget To Dress Like a Pirate!

Remember – Our class will dress like a pirate tomorrow as a reward for working so hard this year.  No weapons are allowed, but we will have plenty of eye patches and scurvy to go around.

Please encourage your student to join us (or be in standard student attire).

Popcorn

Parents, some of your students mentioned that they forgot their popcorn money.  I spoke with the office and was informed that they can bring it in tomorrow.  Please have them hand it to me so I can turn it in all at once.  Thanks!
